10 Essential TOEFL Reading Strategies
The TOEFL Reading section can be challenging, especially with its complex academic passages and time constraints. Mastering these 10 essential strategies will help you navigate this section efficiently and boost your score.
1. Skim the passage first
Before diving into the questions, take 1-2 minutes to skim the passage. Focus on the first and last sentences of each paragraph, as well as any headings or highlighted text. This gives you a mental map of the passage's structure and main ideas, making it easier to locate information later.
2. Read the questions before deep reading
After skimming, quickly read through all the questions (without answering them yet). This primes your brain to notice relevant information when you read the passage in detail. You'll be surprised how much easier it is to spot answers when you know what you're looking for.
3. Use strategic paragraph reading
When reading each paragraph in detail, focus on:
- The main idea (usually in the first or last sentence)
- Key supporting details
- The relationship between ideas (contrast, cause-effect, etc.)
- The author's purpose for including the paragraph
Pro Tip
Create a mental summary of each paragraph in 5-7 words. This helps you remember where information is located in the passage and improves your overall comprehension.
4. Master reference questions
Reference questions ask what a pronoun (it, they, this, etc.) or other referent word refers to. To answer these:
- Locate the referent word in the passage
- Read a few sentences before it to identify what it's referring to
- Substitute your answer in place of the referent to verify it makes sense
5. Use context for vocabulary questions
For vocabulary-in-context questions, don't rely solely on your knowledge of the word. Instead:
- Read the entire sentence containing the word
- Look for clues in surrounding sentences
- Consider the author's purpose and tone
- Try each answer choice in the original sentence to see which fits best
6. Identify paragraph purposes
The TOEFL often asks about the purpose or function of a paragraph. To answer these questions:
- Identify how the paragraph relates to those before and after it
- Determine if it introduces a new idea, provides evidence, offers a counterargument, etc.
- Look for transition words that signal its function
7. Manage your time effectively
With 54-72 minutes for 3-4 passages and 30-40 questions, time management is crucial:
- Allocate 18 minutes per passage (including questions)
- Spend 3-4 minutes skimming and reading questions
- Use 5-6 minutes for detailed reading
- Allow 8-10 minutes for answering questions
- If you're stuck on a question for more than 30 seconds, mark it and move on
8. Recognize question types
Different question types require different approaches. Common types include:
- Factual Information: Look for explicit details in the passage
- Negative Factual: Identify which answer is NOT mentioned
- Inference: Determine what is implied but not directly stated
- Rhetorical Purpose: Understand why the author included certain information
- Vocabulary: Determine the meaning of a word in context
- Reference: Identify what a pronoun or phrase refers to
- Sentence Simplification: Choose a sentence that has the same essential meaning
- Insert Text: Determine where a new sentence fits in the passage
- Summary: Select the main points of the passage
Practice Exercise
Take a practice TOEFL reading passage and identify each question type before answering. This helps you develop a strategic approach for each type.
9. Use the process of elimination
When unsure about an answer, eliminate obviously incorrect options first:
- Cross out choices that contradict the passage
- Eliminate options that are too extreme ("always," "never")
- Be wary of choices that include information not mentioned in the passage
- After elimination, compare remaining choices carefully
10. Build your academic vocabulary
A strong academic vocabulary is essential for the TOEFL Reading section:
- Study the Academic Word List (AWL)
- Read academic articles in various fields (science, history, business, etc.)
- Learn word roots, prefixes, and suffixes to decode unfamiliar words
- Create flashcards for new vocabulary, including context sentences
